Handling

smallimpactor

When we first took the Bosch 25618 hand impact driver out of the box we were surprised to find a very small and light weight blue colored tool. A slim 1.3 Ah battery accompanied the tool and a belt clip. We slid on the 0.7 Lbs slim lithium battery, easily and test the trigger response and examined the LED light performance – nice and bright with a slight dark shadow caused by the front part of the chuck.

The Bosch impact driver is one of the smallest, compact and lightest drill we’ve tested and reviewed. At 5.5″ long and 3.20 LBS it is extremely compact and can fit the tightest work areas. The blue and black driver is ergonomically designed with a nicely balanced positioning of the handle. The plastic tool and handle are covered with soft protective black rubber. The handle is covered with a very thin layer of rubber that gives a good feeling of increased friction preventing the tool from slipping and moving in your hand while using it.

The positioning of the direction control button is good enabling the selection of directions without changing the grip on the driver. The trigger is smooth, accurate and long and selecting variable speeds is easy. The front 1/4 inch hex shank operates very nicely and we were able to load and remove a screwdriver bit with only one hand (in most of our tests we needed 2 hands to do the same thing).

Power And Torque

30bolts

Bosch sais the 25618 hand impact driver delivers 1500 INCH/LBS at speeds of 0-2800 RPM and with 3200 impacts /minute. As always, we like to check exactly what that means so we performed the 30 hex bolt test ( read here how we conduct the same test to all of our tools to eliminate any variables and come up with accurate and objective results). In our hex bolt test we timed how long it takes to drive 30 1/4 inch x 2.5 inch long hex bolts into 2 wood planks of 2×8 one on top of the other. The Bosch 25618 didn’t perform as good as other 18v impact drivers and finished the job after 3:51 minutes – that is an average of 7.7 seconds for each bolt – not the fastest impactor we’ve seen!

During our drilling we monitored noise levels of 112.7 Decibels – this is the average of all of the 18volt impact drivers.

Power Consumption And Battery Life

25618testresults

In our tests we check how many bolts the driver can drive on 1 battery charge. After we completed our power test we kept driving more bolts into the wood until the battery died completely. In this test we got 48.5 bolts using 1 fully charged battery(1.3 Ah battery) and after dividing the results with the battery size we get the score of 37.7 * bolts for every 1 Ah of battery. The endurance results did not impress us and are in the same range as the Makita BTD 142 we tested.

The charger is very simple in design with 1 led flashing while charging and steady on once charge is complete – once the battery cooled down, we put the battery to charge in the Bosch charger. We were a bit surprised to find out that the charger took 43 minutes to charge such a small battery. That is much slower than most competitors that took less time to charge larger batteries ( Makita 18v -1,5 Ah : 24 minutes, Dewalt 18v-2.2 Ah 44 minutes).

Durability

The 25618 is a well built tool made of a hardened polymer/plastic and a rubber mask covering the front part of the tool. The tool is covered with rubber that provides better grip and protection against every day wear and tear from use on the job site. From its general appearance and build, the tool looks like it can take some abuse – other reviews and websites confirm this too. We give the tool a good rank in durability!

Warranty and customer care

prvtg

The standard warranty that Bosch gives for al of its tools is 1 year however they created a program for their cordless tools called 32 Provantage . After buying the tool you must register your tool via filing out the supplied postcard and sending it or by doing it online on their website. The program gives a warranty of 3 year on the impact driver, 2 years on the batteries. However if you do not register your tool you will only get a 1 year warranty on the tool and battery with an original receipt of purchase.

When we called the Bosch 32 Provantage program to find out a bit more about the program we were surprised how fast we got to an actual customer care representative (not an annoying redirect service). The representative explained the Provantage program to us and when we asked if we “Had to register the tool” the answer was “you must register” – or else you will not enroll and you will need to provide a receipt when asking for service. We then asked if they will honor the warranty for a second hand tool that is less than 1 year old – and the answer was – NO. Only the original buyer can enjoy the warranty and it must be with a receipt from an authorized Bosch seller! So be extra careful before you buy a Bosch tool from someone who isn’t an authorized seller.

Miscellaneous

The Bosch hand impact driver is part of a large 18v family with many new tools joining the family every year. Your 18v charger and battery can fit other 18v bare tools and vice versa.

When testing the hand impact driver with small Phillips screws we found this light and compact tool to be very comfortable for use and we can see how although it is a 18v tool, it can be used for small everyday jobs at home.

Value For Money

The German technology of the Bosch 25618 hand impact driver costs more than its competitors. The performance is in the average of the 18 volt tool family yet the price is higher than the average. The compact size and light weight is really impressive and for that you pay more! If you would like owning a good, compact size and light weight impact driver with solid overall performance – we definitely recommend this tool even though the price is a bit higher than Other impactors.
